Mermaid

Leagues, leagues over the sea
I sail
Couched on a wallowing dolphin's tail.
The sky is on fire, the waves
a-sheen,
I dabble my foot in the billows green.
In a sea-weed hat on the
rocks I sit,
Where tern and sea-mew glide and beat,
And where dark shadows the cormorants meet.
In caverns cool when the
tide's a wash,
I sound my conch to the watery splash.
From out their grottos at
evenings beam,
The mermaids swim with locks agleam.

I'll tell you a tale of the bottomless blue
And it's hey to the starboard, heave-ho
Look out, lad, a mermaid be waiting for you
In mysterious fathoms below
Fathoms below, below
From whence wayward westerlies blow
Where Triton is king and his merpeople sing
In mysterious fathoms below
Heave-ho, heave-ho

The Mermaid’s Wish
Awaken now, or soon be awoke
A chariot’s appeared
Seahorse drawn and mermaid driven
The fish popped up and peered
From the sandy sea-shelves
They watch her graceful dance,
The princess of the lake
Eager for amber sunbeams
Glassy surf won’t penetrate
To shine on coral kingdoms
Within the pearly deep
Her one wish
On brittle star
This fairy of the lagoon
To dance among both stars and shells
And sing to the man in the moon…

The sea laps softly at the sides,
I hear a giggle, but she hides.
My beautiful lady with hair of gold,
Her arms embrace me in their fold.
Till a flick of the tail, away with the tides.

Blue waters of crystal deep
The Mermaids often fall asleep
If the giant serpent starts to rise
The sea creatures often hide their guise
As the Mermaids watch with curious eyes
